On the 5th May 1990, Deryk was skid-skiing / boating on Rhos Las Pond in Fochrhiw with friends. At first, it was thought that he had drowned but it was later confirmed that he had suffered from a heart attack. His funeral was held on May 11th at Llwydcoed. Apart from the service being large and touching, one memory to take away that day was that his favourite piece of music - "Ride Of The Valkyries" by Richard Wagner - was played when mourners entered for the service.
